Unlike many other ski towns, Morzine is not a purpose built resort which means that if skiing or snowboarding is not your thing or if you’d like to give the legs a rest, there are plenty of activities to keep you entertained!
Here are our top activities when ‘off the Mountain’:
Snow-shoeing – strap lightweight plastic snowshoes to your feet and walk effortlessly through deep snow. You can join a group led by a knowledgeable local guide and explore hidden parts of the valley. We highly recommend Simone from Magical Snow Treks.
Local market – held every Wednesday morning in the car park by the Post Office in central Morzine. The market hosts lots of local suppliers from the Savoyarde region.
Pedestrian Mountain Pass – explore the mountains as a pedestrian (pedestrian passes available on Super Morzine, Pleney or Prodains lifts) so you can check out Avoriaz, take int he views or have lunch/hot chocolates meet ups the mountains!
Horse & Sleigh Ride in Avoriaz – Avoriaz is a ‘car-free resort’ which means horse and sleigh is your local transport around this unique town. Take the Prodains Express up as a pedestrian and catch a ride from one of the many local horse and sleighs for a tour around the resort.
Mountain adventures – from husky sledding to snow-mobiling, there is a whole host of epic ways to enjoy the mountain. The team at Evo2 offer a whole host of activities, for more information visit https://avoriaz.evolution2.com/en/activite/winter-activities/
Night sledging – accompanied by experienced mountain safety teams, this organised tour will take you on an unforgettable descent down Pleney or Prodains home runs. Ask us for more details.
Cinema – the REX cinema in the centre of town shows most films in Version Originale
Swimming – the fantastic new swimming pool in central Morzine with sauna is a great exercise alternative for those white out weather days. For the family, there is also Aquariaz in Avoriaz which offers flumes and adventures for children as well as outdoor hot tubs for adults.
Local walks – there are lots of local walks along the Dereche river that runs through Morzine, including to the Nyon waterfall. Lake Montriond is just a short free bus ride away and offers a lovely 3km loop with stunning photo opportunities in mid winter!
Ice hockey – the Morzine Avoriaz Penguins Ice Hockey Team have been established since 1963 and take their game very seriously. Games are played regularly in evenings throughout the winter and it’s a fantastic, fast-paced event to spectate.
Coffee – there are lots of lovely places to enjoy some relaxing coffee time in Morzine. Our favourite being Satellite on Rue de Bourg which offers delicious food and cakes too.
Shopping – you can spend hours wandering around town looking at all the lovely individual shops selling local crafts and delicacies.
Sample the local cuisine – there are so many fantastic restaurants in Morzine so why not try some of the delicious local Savoyarde dishes.
Après – Morzine has great Apres! One of the liveliest spots is Bar Robinson after a day on the hill, sampling the infamous Mutzig beer which can be anything from 7-12%! The Folie Douce in Avoriaz is the place to enjoy the full après action with live music and entertainment whilst on the slopes.
Paragliding – From the mountain tops, glide down to the bottom of the valley in tandem paraglide (parapet in French!) controlled by a certified instructor – awesome views!
Ice rink – skate around the town’s open ice rink, a great activity for kids and adults alike! Located just outside the Tourist Office.
Pamper yourself – Treat yourself to a relaxing massage or opt for a full spa day at the brand new spa in nearby Les Gets.
Yoga or Pilates – We know some fantastic teachers who run classes from a local studio in town or who can come to you at the chalet.
Take a ski or Snowboard Lesson – deciding you want to give it a go. We know some fantastic ski and snowboard instructors who will make your first day on the mountain unforgettable!
